Kisan Kavach: Anti-pesticide body suit made to save farmers

Agriculture: Farmers spray pesticides in the fields to protect the crops from insects and other diseases. With continuously decreasing cultivable land, low productivity and decreasing agricultural work force, it is necessary to increase agricultural production to meet the increasing food demands. 15-25 percent of major crops are lost due to insects and other diseases. Use of pesticides is necessary to deal with these challenges. But not using pesticides properly causes harm to both health and environment.

The risk of exposure is higher during spraying, especially when mixing pesticides. Because pesticides can enter the body through skin, eyes, mouth or lungs. Skin contact is particularly dangerous, as some body parts absorb pesticides rapidly and it is important to protect against it.

Misuse, overuse and lack of proper safety measures have resulted in 442 deaths between 2015 and 2018. Now farmers will not have to face this problem. Kisan Kavach, a protective suit designed for the safety of farmers, has been launched. Union Minister Dr Jitendra Singh unveiled the country’s first anti-pesticide body suit Kisan Kavach, which is designed to protect farmers from the harmful effects of pesticides.

What is Kisan Kavach?

Kisan Kavach is an innovative solution designed to address an important security concern for farmers. Developed by BRIC Instem in Bangalore in collaboration with Sapio Health Pvt. Ltd. Kisan Kavach Suraksha Kavach consists of a full-body suit, mask, headshield and gloves, which will help in providing comprehensive protection. This suit uses advanced fabric technology that neutralizes harmful pesticides on contact.

The price of Kisan Kavach is Rs 4 thousand and this suit can be reused after washing. It can be washed 150 times and will work for two years. Its fabric works through a process where a nucleophile is covalently attached to the cotton fibers, allowing it to neutralize pesticides through nucleophilic-mediated hydrolysis. The government is promoting organic farming to reduce the use of pesticides. Due to this, the consumption of chemical pesticides has also decreased.
