The world of chess is gearing up for an extraordinary battle, as the world’s most highly-rated player, Magnus Carlsen of Norway, will take on 18-year-old Gukesh Domaraju, the youngest world champion in the history of the game, at the upcoming Norway Chess 2025.
Gukesh made headlines last Thursday when he defeated China’s Ding Liren 7.5-6.5 in a 14-game encounter in Singapore, clinching the World Championship title and ending Vishwanathan Anand’s reign by Carlsen in Chennai in 2013. After this it was brought back to India for the first time.
Prestigious tournament to be held in Stavanger from 26th May to 6th June
This prestigious tournament, taking place in Stavanger from May 26 to June 6, promises to be one of the most anticipated encounters in chess history between Carlsen and the new champion. Gukesh has achieved remarkable success this year, winning the Tata Steel Masters, leading India to a gold medal at the Chess Olympiad, becoming the youngest winner of the Candidates Tournament and ultimately winning the ultimate prize in classical chess: the World Championship title.
Excited to face the world’s strongest players
The young champion is looking forward to returning to Norway Chess next year. “I am excited to face the strongest players in the world again in Norway and Armageddon will be fun,” Gukesh said. When asked about his preparations, he said, “I will prepare like always and try to be the best version of myself in every way.”
Gukesh finished third in Stavanger in 2023
In 2023, Gukesh finished third in Stavanger. Now, he is back as world champion, ready to challenge Carlsen on home soil. Will the rising star prevail, or will Carlsen’s experience and home advantage prevail?
“This match is truly unique and it is thrilling to see the world champion play against the best player in the world,” said Kjell Madland, founder and tournament director of Norway Chess. “The whole world will be watching and the Norwegian chess team is proud to host such an incredible event in Stavanger,” he said.
