His mortal remains reached the farm house at around 10 pm. Only Abhay Chautala was with his mortal remains.

OP Chautala, son of former Deputy Prime Minister Chaudhary Devi Lal, was the Chief Minister of Haryana 5 times. He died yesterday (December 19) in a hospital in Gurugram at the age of 89. He had suffered a heart attack. He was already suffering from many diseases including heart and diabetes.

Haryana government has declared 3-day state mourning on the death of Chautala. Today 21st December has been declared a holiday. PM Narendra Modi also expressed his condolences by sharing an old photo with Chautala.

Omprakash Chautala became CM with a tenure of 5 days to 5 years.

On 2 December 1989, Chautala became Chief Minister for the first time. Being a Rajya Sabha MP, it was necessary for him to become an MLA within 6 months. He contested the by-election from Meham seat. But there was violence and controversy due to booth capturing. This is known as Maham incident. He had to resign after only 5 and a half months.

After some time, he won the election from Darba and became MLA. Then only after 51 days, Chautala replaced Banarasi Das and became the CM again. But the then Prime Minister VP Singh got angry with this. Chautala was forced to leave the CM chair within 5 days. Master Hukum Singh Phogat was made the new CM.

In the same year in 1990, Prime Minister VP Singh’s government fell due to BJP’s withdrawal of support due to the Ram Mandir movement. Chandrashekhar became the new PM. Devi Lal was again made the Deputy Prime Minister. He made Chautala the Chief Minister for the third time. But this angered the MLAs and the government fell. Chautala had to leave the CM chair within 15 days.

In 1996, Bansilal’s Haryana Vikas Party formed the government with the support of BJP. However, due to differences, BJP withdrew support after 3 years in 1999. Then Congress saved the government by supporting Bansilal but Bansilal did not accept the condition of merger of his party with Congress. After which OP Chautala defeated Bansilal’s MLAs and became CM again on 24 July 1999.

In the year 2000, OP Chautala won 47 out of 90 seats on the promise of providing free electricity. Then he became Chief Minister for the 5th time. However, later the farmers protested when the promise was not fulfilled. After which firing took place in Kandela and 9 farmers died. This is known as the Kandela incident. However, Chautala completed his 5-year tenure as CM.

OP Chautala left school midway. He said that he did not want to study more than his father. However, when he was in jail in the teacher scam, he passed class 10th and 12th between 2017 and 2021. Due to this, ‘Dasvi’ film was made on him. In which his character was played by Abhishek Bachchan.

Sentenced to 10 years in teacher scam, pardoned 2 years ago

In the year 1999–2000, Chautala got trapped in the teacher recruitment scam. After CBI investigation in 2004, FIR was registered against 62 people including OP Chautala, his son Ajay Chautala. In January 2013, the Special CBI Court of Delhi found Chautala and his son Ajay Chautala guilty of corruption and sentenced them to 10 years in prison. However, due to the Centre’s rule of remission of sentence after being over 60 years of age and having served more than half of the imprisonment, he was released from jail almost two years in advance on July 2, 2021.

Political rift broke out in the family as soon as Chautala went to jail There was a split in OP Chautala’s family after he was jailed in the teacher scam. On one hand, the younger son took command of INLD. Ajay Chautala, who went to jail with his father, called back his sons Dushyant Chautala and Digvijay Chautala, who were studying abroad. After which a tussle started between Abhay and his nephews regarding INLD. When OP Chautala came out on parole in 2018, slogans were raised in the Gohana rally on October 7 to make Dushyant the CM. Due to which OP got upset.

After this, elder son Ajay and his two sons were expelled from INLD. Who formed Jananayak Janata Party. However, after this split INLD was never able to come to power. JJP definitely remained in the coalition government with BJP in 2019–24. However, JJP could not win a single seat in the 2024 assembly elections. INLD won 2 seats but Abhay Chautala lost the election.
