India’s legendary off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin retired from international cricket on Wednesday. After the draw of the third Test played against Australia in Brisbane, 38-year-old Ashwin said that today is the last day of his international career.
Ashwin took 537 wickets in 106 Test matches in his career, which is the second highest record in the history of Indian cricket. Only Anil Kumble (619) has more wickets than him. Ashwin has also played 116 ODI and 65 T20 matches and took a total of 765 wickets in his name in all formats. He has not only been India’s best spinner but also a brilliant Test all-rounder who scored 6 centuries in Test cricket.
However, he did not get a place in the first Test (Perth) in the ongoing series against Australia. But he made a comeback in the second Test in Adelaide and took one wicket. This match proved to be the last international match of his career. Talking to the media, Ashwin said, “Today is the last day of international cricket for me. However, I feel I still have cricket left in me, but now I would like to showcase it at the club level.”
Ashwin expressed his gratitude for the time he spent with his teammates and especially captain Rohit Sharma. He said, “I enjoyed my career very much and created many memorable moments with Rohit and other players. These moments will stay with me forever.”
