In a major breakthrough in the fight against terrorism, the United States has approved the extradition of Tahawwur Hussain Rana, a Pakistani-origin Canadian businessman, to India. Rana is accused of playing a significant role in the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks, which claimed over 160 lives, including six Americans.

convicted in the United States

Rana, aged 63, was previously convicted in the United States for supporting the Pakistani terrorist organization Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) and for his role in a foiled plot to attack a Danish newspaper. In 2013, he received a 14-year prison sentence for these offenses.

Court says extradition treaty between the United States and India permits Rana’s extradition

The recent ruling by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit affirmed the decision to extradite Rana to India, where he faces multiple charges, including conspiracy to wage war, murder, and terrorism related to the Mumbai attacks. The court determined that the extradition treaty between the United States and India permits Rana’s extradition, noting that the charges he faces in India are distinct from those for which he was previously acquitted in the U.S.
